In comparison to the DC-DC converter, the AC-AC converter is fairly basic. This is due to the fact that an AC-AC Converter simply refers to a transformer that transforms AC from one voltage level to another. However, without a transformer, converting DC to DC is a time-consuming process with significant power losses. However, diodes are used in the production of AC-DC converters. Without the need for a transformer, this circuit converts 5V-18V DC to 7.5V-35V DC in a simple, low-cost, high-precision manner. With only a few components, the circuit is simple to build. The circuit is the greatest Inverter Circuit option.

What is a DC-DC Converter?

A DC-to-DC converter is an electrical circuit or electromechanical device that changes the voltage level of a direct current (DC) source. It’s a particular kind of electric power converter. Power levels range from extremely low (small batteries) to extremely high (large batteries) (high-voltage power transmission).

Portable electronic devices such as cellular phones and laptop computers, which are powered mostly by batteries, require DC to DC converters. Switching mechanisms are used in practical electronic converters. By briefly keeping the input energy and then releasing it to the output at a different voltage, switched-mode DC-to-DC converters convert one DC voltage level to another, which may be greater or lower.

Circuit: Simple DC-DC Converter using 555 Timer

The DC-DC conversion circuit is constructed using the widely used IC LM555 in multivibrator mode, as well as some basic components such as transistors, capacitors, and resistors.

We haven’t utilized any preset parameters to keep the DC-DC Converter Circuit using 555 simple. This means that the output voltage level is determined by the load. In theory, the output voltage is twice that of the input voltage. However, because of losses caused by transistors and rectifier diodes, such a level cannot be achieved.

At these junctions, the voltage loss is constant at 0.6 V. However, with a 6 V input voltage, the losses are correspondingly more than with an 18 V input voltage. A signal of around 10 kHz is generated by a 555 Timer IC configured in multivibrator mode. Either Transistor Q1 or Q2 is turned on depending on the IC’s output level. Capacitor C2 gets charged during the half-period as a result of this. The charge from Capacitor C2 is then transferred to Capacitor C3 throughout the remaining half period. The output voltage is slightly less than twice the input voltage as a result of this.

Because of the frequency factor, the diodes 1N4004 are employed. You can also use diode 1N4001. The converter consumes 5 mA in addition to double the output current.

Circuit Simulation

Proteus Software was used to simulate a Simple DC-DC Converter utilizing a 555 Timer IC (7.5-35V). In the gif picture below, the output results are shown.
