Many existing,  well-established home automation systems are based on wired communication.   This doesn’t represent an issue until the framework is arranged well ahead of time and introduced during the actual development of the structure. However, for previously existing structures the execution cost goes extremely high.

Due to the rapid improvement of technologies in various sectors, human lives have been directed towards a smarter regime. One such device is Refrigerator. In the modern kitchen, the Refrigerator plays a vital role in preserving food items. The devices are being programmed to be smart in order to cater to our needs. In this smart device, there is a need for a more efficient way to monitor the amount of food material left for the forthcoming days and in the case of shop, it is necessary to avail the required quantity to improve the business. The proposed Internet of Things(IoT) system detects the shortage of food items, by transmitting the number of available food items to the users through mobile applications. The system notifies the user if they run out of groceries. It gives an alert to the users to place an order if the weight falls below the threshold value. Moreover,  It is also designed to sense the quality of the foods which prevents further food spoilage. The monitoring and notifications regarding the food status as well as the quality of the food would be done using an Android App.

PROPOSED SYSTEM:

Smart Fridge is designed as an IoT-based Refrigerator, using Computer Vision to automatically log in food and communicate with users by SMS of current storage, expiration date, nutrition, and recommended receipts. This paper presents Smart Home concepts for Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that will make life at home more convenient. In this paper, we first describe the overall design of a low-cost Smart Refrigerator built with ESP8266 as the microcontroller. Next, the system comprises different sensors each performing its own Functions. The UV sensor is used to detect the presence of food from which the quantity is calculated. An MQ5 gas sensor is used to detect the methane gas which determines the freshness of the food.  DHT11 sensor to sense the temperature and humidity. IR sensors are used to maintain the count of items like milk bottles, tetra packs, eggs, etc. Load cell along with HX711 which load cell amplifier is used for measuring the weight of the vegetable and fruits tray mainly along with other items. The Magnetic Door sensor is used to sense the door movement. All the data retrieved by the sensors is uploaded and stored in the ThingSpeak cloud platform. An android application is built using MIT App Inventor 2 where all the data is displayed by retrieving the data from the cloud. A corresponding notification is sent to the user if the data from any of the sensors cross the threshold values.

COMPONENTS REQUIRED:

  • ESP8266 MICROCONTROLLER

ESP8266 was designed as a Serial Wifi Wireless Transceiver Module with self-contained SOC and integrated TCP/IP protocol stack.  It gives access to any microcontroller to your WiFi network. This Module is capable of either hosting an application or offloading all Wi-Fi networking functions from another application processor. This wireless module is completely addressable over SPI and UART protocols. As a result grants permission to connect your sensors or project directly to it through its GPIO’s.

  • MQ5 SENSOR:

A GAS sensor or a GAS Detector is defined as a chemical sensor that detects/measures the concentration of gas in its vicinity. MQ5 sensor also known as MQ-5 Methane LPG Liquid Propane Gas Sensor ideal for the detection or measuring of Methane which determines the freshness of food. It measures gases at a concentration range from 300 to 10000ppm. It offers very good sensitivity and fast response to Methane, natural gas, and also shows a small sensitivity to alcohol and smoke.

  • IR SENSOR:

An IR sensor is an electronic sensor that measures and detects the infra-red light radiating from an object or its environment. These lights are not visible by naked eyes but can be seen through a camera. That hen light falls on the IR sensor, the photodiode response in terms of change in resistance. This change in resistance is measured in terms of voltage. This module can be connected directly to a microcontroller, Arduino, or Raspberry Pi.

  • DHT11 TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY SENSOR

A temperature sensor is designed as an electronic device that measures the temperature of its environment and converts the input data into electronic data to record monitor or signal temperature changes. The DHT 11 is a low-powered electronic device that lets us get the value of the temperature and the moisture. The sensor consists of a capacitive humidity sensor and a Thermistor connected to a high-performance 8-bit microcontroller.

  • HX711 MODULE:

HX711 module also known as Load Cell Amplifier breakout board designed for the HX711 IC. This IC allows you to easily read load cells to measure weight and load cells can be easily integrated into your project. These modules designed specifically for the high precision electronic scale design in which an input circuit is configured to provide a bridge type pressure bridge (such as pressure, weighing sensor mode),

  • Load Cell:

A Load cell measures and weight of the thing that is resting on it. It produces the output as analog signals which intern passed into the HX711 Board. A load cell transducer/sensor creates an electrical signal whose magnitude is directly proportional to the force measured.

DOOR SENSOR:

This Magnetic Door open sensors are widely used in Home Alarm systems used as a door or window security system. In our proposed system, the door sensor is used to detect the movement of the door. This simple magnetic door lock sensor consists of a Magnet and Magnetic Sensor. In the presence of the magnet, this simple switch within the sensor gets activated. In order to use this sensor as a door lock sensor, the magnet mounted on the door/window and the magnet sensor on the door/window frame.

CONCLUSION:

The main aim of this IoT-based Low-Cost Smart Refrigerator system is that monitor the temperature levels, the weight of the food items as well as the freshness of the foods. It notifies the user if any abnormality is sensed in the temperature and gas sensor readings. It also alerts the user in case he is running out of groceries. Overall it helps the user to achieve a healthy lifestyle.

In short, this IoT Based Smart System is designed as a cost-effective, practical, eco-friendly, and safest way to save energy and money in this technology world. Moreover, in this system, information can be accessed anytime and anywhere. It clearly tackles the two problems that the world is facing today, spoilage of food and also shopping for groceries  very efficiently.
