The ML8511 breakout is designed as an ultraviolet light sensor which is quite easy to use. The ML8511 UV (ultraviolet) Sensor works by the principle of outputting an analogue signal with respect to the amount of UV light that’s tested. This breakout is widely used in creating devices that warn the user of sunburn or test the UV index as it relates to weather conditions. This sensor chip is a microcontroller-compatible module used for detecting the intensity of UV radiation in sunlight. Hence, widely used in any application where we want to monitor the amount of UV light and is simple to connect to any microcontroller through one ADC channel.
The ML8511 UV (ultraviolet) Sensor offers a range of the most effective light tested by the sensor is 280-390nm. This sensor is categorized as part of the UVB (burning rays) spectrum and most of the UVA (tanning rays) spectrum. Hence, it outputs an analogue voltage that is linearly related to the measured UV intensity (mW / cm2). Thus the output voltage directly connects to the MCU. The in-built A / D digital/analogue converter in the MCU process the voltage signal, hence no photoelectric converting circuit is required in the module. Moreover, this compact-sized sensor, with the low-profile surface-mount package, makes it ideal for use in portable devices.
