Description

74LS193 4-Bit Binary Counter IC circuit designed as a synchronous reversible up-down counter.  74LS193 comes with a 4-bit binary counter in which Synchronous operation provided by all flip-flops clocked simultaneously. As a result,  the outputs change simultaneously as instructed by the steering logic. This mode of operation eliminates the output counting spikes normally associated with asynchronous (ripple clock) counters. The outputs of the four master-slave flip-flops are triggered on a low-to-high level transition of the clock input if the enable input is low. A high at the enable input inhibits counting. The direction of counting is determined by which count input is pulsed while the other count input is held high.

The amount of the down-up input determines the direction of the count. When the counter is low, it counts up, and when it is high, it counts down. This counter is entirely programmable, with outputs that may be adjusted to any level by setting the load input to low and entering the desired values at the data inputs. The output will alter regardless of the clock input’s size. By simply changing the count length with the preset inputs, the counters may be used as modulo-N divisions. To reduce the drive need, the clock was turned down and the load inputs were buffered. For large parallel words, this dramatically decreases the number of clock drivers and other components required.

There is a clear input that, when set to a high level, switches all outputs to a low level, regardless of the count or load inputs. The clear, count, and load inputs are buffered to reduce the drive needs of clock drivers and other components necessary for large words.
