How to design a Power Bank Circuit on PCB?

The increasing complexity of digital products drives the widespread use of smartphones in a variety of applications. Consequently, the battery backup time decreases. It would be enjoyable to construct a portable Power Bank for mobile phone use as a backup charging source in case of need.

In this project, instead of using two separate modules to charge mobile phones, we are using a single PCB. The last one was simple to construct, but this one is tidy, compact, and configurable. Using  EasyEDA, we generated a PCB layout and schematics for this Power bank. The description below contains all PCB layouts, schematics, and Gerber files. In this setup, a charging circuit was used to charge the battery of the power bank (18650 Lithium cell) and another charging circuit was used to charge the mobile phone on the same board.

Components Required:

  • PCB (ordered from JLCPCB) -1
  • IC TP4056
  • XL6009
  • 33uH Inductor
  • Female USB Connector
  • Female Charging pin
  • Burgstick
  • Resistor 1.2K, 1k (3)
  • Capacitor 1uF -3
  • Capacitor 10uF, 47uF, 100uF, 220uF
  • Variable Resistor 5K
  • 18650 Lithium cell
  • LED
  • 1N5824 Diode

Circuit Diagram and Explanation:

This power bank circuit PCB board is comprised of two major components: the TP4056-based power bank battery charging circuit and the XL6009-based DC-to-DC boost converter. This component is used to increase the voltage from 3.7v to 4.5v-6v. This circuit uses a potentiometer to set the output voltage between 4.5v and 6v. The 18650 lithium battery is charged by a micro USB pin, while the mobile phone is charged via a female USB pin connector. A slide switch is also used to change the charging mode for 18650 mobile phones and cell phones. The video at the conclusion of this article demonstrates the whole operation of the Power Bank.

Circuit and PCB Design using EasyEDA:

We chose the online EDA tool called EasyEDA. EasyEDA to develop this Power Bank PCB Circuit. When compared to other PCB fabricators, we have found EasyEDA to be incredibly user-friendly and frequently utilised. Check out all of our PCB work here. After the PCB projects has been designed, we can order PCB samples using their low-cost PCB fabrication services. Additionally, they offer a component sourcing service in which they maintain a big supply of electronic components and allow customers to order the necessary components together with the PCB.

While designing your circuits and PCBs, you can also make your circuit and PCB designs public so that other users can copy or edit them and can take benefit from there, we have also made our whole Circuit and PCB layouts public for this Power Bank Module, check the below link:

  • You can view any PCB Layer (Top, Bottom, Topsilk, Bottomsilk, etc.) by selecting the layer from the ‘Layers’ Window.
  • Using the EasyEDA Photo View button, you can also view the PCB as it will appear after construction.

Calculating and Ordering Samples online:

After completing the design of this Power Bank PCB, the PCB can be ordered at  JLCPCB.com. Gerber File is necessary to order PCBs from JLCPCB. To get Gerber files for your PCB, simply click the Fabrication Output button on the EasyEDA editor, followed by the Download button on the EasyEDA PCB order page.

Now go to JLCPCB.com and Click the Quote Now or Buy Now option, then select the quantity of PCBs you wish to order, the number of copper layers you require, the PCB thickness, copper weight, and even the PCB color.
