74LS393 designed as an Dual 4-Bit Binary Counter IC. There are eight master-slave flip-flops in each of these monolithic circuits. Additionally, additional gating is required to create two separate four-bit counters in a single package. Each of the two four-bit binary counters in the 74LS393 has a clear and a clock input.
Meanwhile, counters included in each package give N-bit binary Divide-by-256 functionality. Each counter stage of the DM74LS393 has parallel outputs, allowing system-timing signals to be any submultiple of the input count frequency. The divide-by-two and divide-by-five counters on this IC can be used to create cycle lengths of any whole and/or cumulative multiple of 2 or 5 up to 100. When a bi quinary counter is connected, a separate division by two circuits is used to create symmetry at the final output step.
