The 74LS85, also known as the SN54/7485, is a four-bit magnitude comparator with two binary format inputs. In electrical equipment, besides to addition and subtraction, binary number comparison is also required to accomplish operations. We employ TTL-based comparators to tackle this problem. The comparator’s main function is to compare the two input bits and then produce three outputs. The output will always be in 3-bits, describing the relationship between the inputs. The inputs might be bigger or equal in size. Comparators may be created using logic gates, however to avoid excessive circuit sizes, we can utilize a prefabricated comparator IC.
The integrated circuit IC 74LS85 is a magnitude comparator that may be used to compare binary data. It is smaller in size and comes in a variety of packages to meet the needs of various circuits. The 74LS85 function compares two 4-bit binary data and provides output via the output pins in the form of HIGH and LOW states. The IC 74LS85 takes eight parallel inputs for two 4-bit binary data and outputs a 3-bit parallel output. The IC consumes little power and outputs in TTL format, making it compatible with other TTL-based devices and microcontrollers.
