An ADP3188 designed as a multiphase synchronous buck switching regulator controller with great efficiency. This IC is designed to convert a 12 V main supply to the core supply voltage required by Intel CPUs with excellent performance. This controller IC comes with an integrated 6-bit DAC that allows it to read a voltage identification (VID) code from the processor and set the output voltage between 0.8375 V and 1.6 V. In addition, the logic level outputs are driven by a multimode PWM design with a customizable switching frequency that is optimized for VR size and efficiency. The 2, 3, or 4-phase operation of the IC are performed via programming the output signals phase relationship, allowing up to four complementary buck switching stages to be built.
The ADP3188 also comprises of programmable no-load offset and slope capabilities. Thereby modify the output voltage as a function of the load current, ensuring that it is always in the best position for a system transient. The ADP3188 also has configurable current limiting and accurate and dependable short circuit protection. Also included is a delayed Power Good output that allows the CPU to request on-the-fly output voltage modifications. ADP3188 is a 28-lead TSSOP package designed to operate in a commercial temperature range of 0°C to 85°C.
Once normal operation begins, the ADP3188’s PWM outputs function as logic-level devices. The detection is normal, and it’s designed to power external gate drivers like the ADP3418. Because each phase is monitored independently, operation with a duty cycle approaching 100% is conceivable. For overlapping phases, more than one output can be turned on at the same time.
