The ATmega128A designed as a effectively low-power, high-performance CMOS 8-bit microcontroller. It comes with 128K bytes of in-system programmable non-volatile storage manufactured using Atmel’s high-density non-volatile memory technology. Meanwhile, it is compatible with the industry-standard 80C51 instruction set and pinout. The on-chip ISP Flash on the chip permits the program memory to reprogrammed through SPI interface in-system by  a standard non-volatile memory programmer. Or via an On-chip Boot program running on the AVR core.
In this Atmel microcontroller, by combining a flexible 8-bit CPU with in-system programmable Flash on a monolithic chip, Atmel ATMEGA128A becomes effectively powerful microcontroller. In order that it delivers a highly flexible and affordable solution to various embedded control applications. Moreover, the Atmel ATMEGA128A features 128Kbytes of In-System Programmable Flash with Read- While-Write capabilities, 4Kbytes EEPROM, 4Kbytes SRAM, 53 general purpose I/O lines, 32 general purpose working registers. And also equipped with Real Time Counter (RTC), four flexible Timer/Counters with compare modes and PWM, 2 USARTs. This Atmel microcontroller comes with one byte-oriented Two-wire Serial Interface, an 8-channel, 10-bit ADC with optional differential input stage with programmable gain, programmable Watchdog Timer with Internal Oscillator, one SPI serial port.
The Idle Mode stops functioning of CPU allowing the RAM, timer/counters, serial port, and interrupt system to continue their operation. Whereas, the Power-down mode saves the RAM contents but freezes the oscillator. Thereby disabling all other chip functions until the next external interrupt or hardware reset. These two features makes it suitable for battery operated applications. Whereas in Power-save mode, the asynchronous timer continues to run. Thus allowing the user to maintain a timer base while rest of device is sleeping.
