- Less overall maintenance due to absence of brushes
- Reduced size with far superior thermal characteristics
- Higher speed range and lower electric noise generation.
- It has no mechanical commutator and associated problems
- High efficiency and high output power to size ratio due to the use of permanent magnet rotor
- High speed of operation even in loaded and unloaded conditions due to the absence of brushes that limits the speed
- Smaller motor geometry and lighter in weight than both brushed type DC and induction AC motors.
- Long life as no inspection and maintenance is required for commutator system
- Higher dynamic response due to low inertia and carrying windings in the stator
- Less electromagnetic interference
- Low noise due to absence of brushes
A motor turns electrical energy into mechanical energy when it is provided. Different types of motors are commonly used. Brushless DC motors (BLDC) are a type of motor that has a high efficiency and outstanding controllability and is extensively utilised in a variety of applications. In comparison to other motor types, the BLDC motor saves energy. Brushless DC motors, as their name suggests, do not utilise brushes. Brushed motors use brushes to carry current from the commutator to the rotor’s coils. So, how does a brushless motor provide electricity to the rotor coils? Because the coils aren’t on the rotor, it doesn’t work. Instead, the rotor is a permanent magnet, and the coils are locked in place on the stator rather than rotating. There is no tension in the coils since they do not move.
When the stator coils get power from the source, they transform into an electromagnet that produces a consistent field in the air gap. Despite the fact that the source of power is DC, switching produces an AC voltage waveform with a trapezoidal shape. The rotor continues to revolve due to the force of contact between the electromagnet stator and the permanent magnet rotor.
The matching windings electrified as North and South poles when the windings were switched as High and Low signals. The motor rotates because the North and South poles of the permanent magnet rotor align with the stator poles.
