The CD4016 designed as a Quad Bilateral Switch IC comprises four switches that can be controlled individually using a control pin. These switches are capable of conducting in both directions making it bilateral and is widely used for multiplexing analogue or digital signals. The CD4016 IC operates at a wide range of working voltage, a wide range of working conditions. And directly interfaces with CMOS, NMOS, and TTL. The output of the IC always comes in TTL. This makes it quite easy to function with other TTL devices and microcontrollers/Microprocessors. The IC also comes as smaller in size and offers much faster speed which makes it highly reliable in every kind of device.
The CD4016 is commonly used in multiplexing applications; it can also be used to isolate signals. These IC operates at a supply voltage from 3V to 18V but is commonly operated at 5V, 10V or 15V nominal voltages. It can switch voltages up to 20V (peak). This IC is manufactured in a 16 pin hermetically sealed dual inline package (DIP). And also pin-for-pin compatible with CD4066B.
A Bilateral switch is designed as an analogue switch that operates forward or reverses bias conditions. This indicates that either side of the switch can be used as the input. As a result, the current flows in one direction and the other direction, depending on which side comes as input. A bilateral switch functions as a single-pole, single-throw switch with each switch consisting of a control terminal. In order to transmit signals from the input side to the output side, the control or enable terminal must be HIGH.
