CD4055 belongs to the CD4000 IC series. The CD4054 designed as a display driver IC for a 7 – segment Liquid crystal display. These IC is based on the complementary MOS (CMOS) technology integrated with p-type and n-type enhancement mode transistors. CD4054 manufactured in a 16-pin hermetically sealed dual in line IC package. The IC offers a wide variety of working voltages and is directly interfaceable with other TTL, CMOS, and NMOS devices. Each pin of the IC has static protection through I/O clamping diodes.
CD4055BE designed as a single-digit BCD-to-7-segment decoder/driver circuit offering level-shifting functions on the chip. This feature allows the BCD input-signal swings (VDD to VSS) to  to stay an equivalent as or different from the 7-segment output-signal swings (VDD to VEE). The 7-segment outputs of this IC controlled by the DISPLAY FREQUENCY (DF) input which makes the chosen segment outputs to be low, high, or a square-wave output (for liquid-crystal displays).
When the DF input remains low, the output segments will be high when selected by the BCD inputs. When the DF input is high, the output segments switch to low when selected by the BCD inputs. Furthermore, when a square wave is present at the DF input, the selected segments will provide a square-wave output that is 180° out of phase with the DF input. Those unselected segments will provides a square-wave output that is in phase with the input. DF square-wave repetition rates for LCDs usually range form 30 Hz (well above flicker rate) to 200 Hz (well below the upper limit of the liquid-crystal frequency response). Moreover, the CD4055BE employs a level-shifted high-amplitude DF output required for driving the common electrode in liquid-crystal displays. Thus Decoding of all input combinations on the CD4055B allows the displays of 0 to 9 as well as L, P, H, A, -, and a blank position.
The CD4055BE CMOS Liquid Crystal Display Driver IC manufactured in 16-lead dual-in-line plastic packages (E suffix), 16-lead small-outline packages (M, M96, MT and NSR suffixes), and also in 16-lead thin shrink small-outline packages (PW and PWR suffixes).
