E18-D80NK known as an Infrared Obstacle Avoidance Sensor consists of an infrared transmitter and receiver which together make up a photoelectric sensor. The sensor provides a long detection distance with a range of 3-80cm and outputs only less interference by visible light because it uses modulated Infrared light. The screwdriver adjustment in the sensor is used to set the detected distance, thus providing a digital output when it senses something within that range. This sensor does not return a distance value.
This Adjustable Infrared Sensor features small, easy to use, inexpensive, simple to assemble, and less interference. Thus can be widely used in a robot to avoid obstacles, interactive media, industrial assembly lines, and many other occasions. It consists of 3 connecting wires:
- Red: +5 VDC
- Black: Ground
- Yellow: Output-Open collector pulldown with 10K pull-up resistor to 5v supply
The principle behind this effective distance sensor is the modulation of infrared light. The receiver in the sensor is sensitive only to infrared light. Therefore it is not very sensitive to ambient light compared to plain infrared detectors. The output switching signal differs according to the obstacles. Under no obstacles condition, output remains high whereas remains low when there are obstacles. The bright light is present behind the probe to determine the scope of 3cm – 80cm. It does not measure the distance. The interferences caused by the normal light of a light bulb or the sunlight are overcome/eliminated by the implementation of a modulated IR signal. Moreover, the sensor provides non-contact detection.
