A motor-generator is a device that converts electrical energy into a different form. Frequency, voltage, and phase of electricity are all converted using motor–generator sets. They can also be used to disconnect electrical loads from the power source. Large motor–generators were commonly used to convert industrial volumes of electricity, while smaller motor–generators (like the one in the photo) were used to convert battery power to greater DC voltages.
Electrical loads are isolated from power supply lines using motor generators. It is made up of an electric generator that is powered by an electric motor. This is used to convert the frequency, voltage, and phase of electrical power. Unlike a traditional electrical generator, it is powered by a stream turbine or internal combustion engine.
They are also used to:
- Isolate electrical loads from the electrical power supply line
- Eliminate spikes and variations in large power supplies
- Provide phase matching between different electrical systems
Smaller motor-generators have been used to convert battery power to greater DC voltages, while larger motor-generators have been used to convert industrial volumes of electricity.
