MLX90614’s designed as an infrared thermometer designed for non-contact temperature measurement. This Temperature Sensor Module perfect for body temperature measurement and movement detection. MLX90614’ offers an internal 17-bit ADC, a low noise amplifier, and a powerful DSP ensuring high accuracy and resolution. This module consists of both the IR sensitive thermopile detector chip and the signal conditioning ASIC integrated into the same TO-39 can. The sensor provides a field of view of 35 degrees with a gradient of temperature compensation for short-distance measurement. Thus it provides a sensing range from 4 cm -10 cm approximate. Moreover, the breakout board comes with all of the components needed for operation and two types of pins.
This non-contact thermometer can be interfaced easily with Arduino, or any microcontroller. It communicates via dedicated I2C protocol and uses the same SDA (Data) and SCL (Clock) lines. This module consists of 10K pull-up resistors on these lines. MLX90614’module consists of an onboard 662K 3.3V regulator that can handle up to 6V max on the VIN power input pin though 5V is typical. When the module powered with 3.3V on the VIN pin, the voltage passes through the regulator with minimal voltage drop. Thus the module is compatible with both 5V and 3.3V MCUs.
While working as a thermal switch, a preset temperature can be programmed into the device. Whereas when the temperature reached, the PWM pin triggered causing interrupt input to an MCU or used to directly drive a relay or similar device. The output drive capability is 25mA. The user configures the module outputs a continuous 10-bit PWM signal on the SDA pin. Thus configured continuously to transmit the measured temperature in the range of -40 to 85 °C, with an output resolution of 0.02 °C, adjusted via the I2C bus.
