L293D Push-Pull Four Channel Driver IC designed as a monolithic integrated high voltage, high current four channel driver. These IC designed explicitly to accept standard DTL or TTL logic levels and drive inductive loads. Such as relays solenoides, DC and stepping motors and switching power transistors. Inorder to simplify the use as two bridges each pair of channels comes with an enable input. A separate supply input provided for the logic allows the operation at a lower voltage.
Moreover, the device is ideal to be used in switching applications at frequencies up to 5 kHz.This driver IC can supply a motor with a 0.6A current with operating voltage between 5V-36V. L293D – Push-Pull Four-Channel Driver with Diodes offers a 1.2A of the stall current. Each channel controlled via a TTL-compatible logic input. And every pair of drivers (a full bridge) equipped with an inhibit input that turns off all four transistors. Moreover, the L293D consists of the output clamping diodes within the IC allowing complete interfacing with inductive loads.
The L293D manufactured in a 16 lead plastic package that consists of 4 center pins connected together and used for heatsinking . Each output within the IC exists as an entire totem-pole drive circuit, comprising of a Darlington transistor sink and a pseudoDarlington source. Drivers are enabled in pairs, with drivers 1 and a couple of enabled by 1,2EN and drivers 3 and 4 enabled by 3,4EN. The L293D designed to work at a temperature range from 0°C to 70°C.
When an enable input made high, the associated drivers comes enabled, and their outputs remain active and in
phase with their inputs. When the enable input made low, those drivers become disabled,  and their outputs are off and within the high-impedance state.
