The PCF8583 is a clock and calendar chip that is based on a 2048 bit static CMOS1 RAM, organized as 256 words by 8 bits. Data and addresses are transferred serially over the I2C-bus, two lines at a time. The word address register is automatically incremented after each written or read data byte.Address pin A0 is used for programming the hardware address, allowing the connection of two devices to the bus without additional hardware. The clock, calendar, and counter functions all rely on the built-in 32.768kHz oscillator. And, as the first 8 bytes of the RAM are dedicated to this task, it operates quickly and reliably.
An on-chip 32.768 kHz oscillator, a frequency divider, a serial two-line bidirectional I 2C-bus interface, and a Power-On Reset (POR) circuit are all included in the PCF8583. The alarm control register (address 08h) is activated by setting the alarm enable bit of the control and status register. Alarm control register can be used to establish a dated alarm, a daily or weekly alarm, or a timer alarm. Timer register 07h can be configured to count hundredths of a second, seconds, minutes, hours or days in the clock modes (address 07h). When you don’t set an alarm, the days go by.
