Description

PIC16F876A Microcontroller IC manufactured in 28-pin packages, while PIC16F876 devices are available in 40-pin and 44-pin packages. This PIC microcontroller is meant to be a powerful microcontroller (200 nanosecond instruction execution). CMOS FLASH-based 8-bit microcontroller packs that are straightforward to programmed (just 35 single word instructions). It is based on Microchip’s strong PIC architecture and is upwardly compatible with the PIC16C5X, PIC12CXXX, and PIC16C7X devices in a 28-pin package.

The PIC16F876A has 128 bytes of EEPROM data memory, self-programming, an ICD, two comparators, and five 10-bit A/D converter channels. Furthermore, the synchronous serial port can be set up as either a 3-wire Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or a 2-wire Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) bus and a Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (USART). All of these characteristics make it an ideal device for higher-level A/D applications. It has a broad range of uses in the automotive, industrial, appliance, and consumer markets. Furthermore, the PIC16F87XA microcontroller family shares a similar architecture with the following exceptions:

  • The PIC16F873A and PIC16F874A share half of the PIC16F876A and PIC16F877A’s total on-chip memory.
  • Three I/O ports are available on the 28-pin devices, whereas five are available on the 40/44-pin devices.
  • These 28-pin devices have fourteen interrupts, while the 40/44-pin devices have fifteen
  • Five A/D input channels are available on the 28-pin devices, whereas eight are available on the 40/44-pin devices.
  • The Parallel Slave Port is only available on 40/44-pin devices.
