A tilt sensor is an instrument used for measuring the tilt in multiple axes of a reference plane. Tilt sensors allow you to detect the orientation or inclination by measuring the tilting position with reference to gravity. Also known as tilt switches or rolling ball sensors. This is a small-sized, inexpensive, low-power, and easy-to-use sensor used in a wide range of applications. A tilt sensor is defined as one of the crucial parts of computer-assisted circuitry. This sensor provides accurate information about the horizontal and vertical inclination of the aeroplanes. So that the pilot of the plane can easily understand the process of dealing with the obstacles during the flight and can overcome them.
Tilt sensors are basically a type of transducer that produces an electrical signal varying with respect to an angular movement. These sensors measures slope and tilt within a limited range of motion. This design of a rolling ball with a conductive plate beneath them. When the sensor supplied power, the rolling ball falls to the bottom of the sensor forming-an electrical connection. When the sensor tilts, the rolling ball doesn’t fall to the bottom so that the current cannot flow through the two end terminals of the sensor.Meanwhile¸ certain vibrations can disrupt the sensor’s functionality. Hence vibration resistance measures are required, especially when the sensors operate in harsh conditions.
The functioning of tilt sensors is influenced by certain factors such as gravity, vibration, temperature, zero offsets, linearity, cross-axis sensitivity, acceleration/deceleration, shock, clear line of sight between the user and the measured point, and calibration of tilt sensors. The number of axes used in a tilt sensor varies from application to application. Moreover, the Noise may cause harmonic distortions in the function of the sensor, resulting in output variation and a reduction of system efficiency.
