A four-layer solid-state current-controlling device known as a silicon-controlled rectifier or semiconductor-controlled rectifier. SCRs are unidirectional, meaning they can only carry current in one direction. TRIACs, on the other hand, are bidirectional (i.e. charge carriers can flow through them in either direction). TRIACs may be activated by either a positive or negative current running through the gate electrode, unlike SCRs, which are normally triggered by a positive current flowing into the gate.
