An aluminium electrolytic capacitor, also known as an electrolytic capacitor, has one electrode made of aluminium metal that is covered with a very thin layer of aluminium oxide as a dielectric and has an electrolyte as its second electrode.

Aluminium electrolytic capacitors are commonly used in power supplies and DC-DC converters to smooth and buffer rectified DC voltages in a wide range of electronic devices. In addition, they are used in industrial power supplies. Because of the anodization principle, aluminium electrolytic capacitors are polarised capacitors. They can only be used when a direct current voltage is applied with the proper polarity.
