Description

The 74197 designed as a high−speed monolithic modulo−16 binary counter manufactured in a 14−Lead plastic DIP type package. It consists of 4 DC coupled, master−slave flip−flops that internally interconnected to supply a divide−by−two and a divide−by−eight counter. This device is fully programmable; that mean the outputs also preset to any state by placing a low on the count/load input and entering the specified data at the data inputs. The outputs will change to consider the data inputs independent of the state of the clocks.

During the count operation, transfer of data to the outputs occurs on the negative−going fringe of the clock pulse. The 74197 features an immediate clear which when taken low sets all outputs low despite the state of the clocks. The 74197 also used as a 4−bit latch by using the count/load input because the strobe and entering data at the data inputs. The outputs will directly follow the data inputs when the count/load is low, but will remain unchanged when the count/load is high and therefore the clock inputs are inactive. All inputs are diode−clamped to attenuate transmission−line effects and simplify design and are compatible with most TTL logic families.

A decade/BCD counter defined as a serial digital counter that count up to 10 decimal digits. It goes through 10 unique combinations of output & RESETS for each new clock input. A BCD counter can count 0000, 0001, 0010, 1000, 1001, 1010, 1011, 1110, 1111, 0000, and 0001 then on.
