IC 7806 defined as a 6V Voltage Regulator that restricts the output voltage to 6V output for various ranges of input voltages. The LM78XX series available in an aluminum TO-3 package, with several fixed output voltages. This makes them useful in a wide range of applications. One of these is local on-card regulation, eliminating the distribution problems associated with single-point regulation. The voltage ranges available makes this regulator perfect to use in logic systems, instrumentation, HiFi, and other solid-state electronic equipment. Although it is designed primarily as fixed voltage regulators, these devices along with the external components used to obtain adjustable voltages and currents.
This 7806 6V Positive Voltage Regulator IC allows over 1.0A load current if adequate heat sinking is provided. A Current limiting feature included in order to limit the peak output current to a safe value. To limit the internal power dissipation, safe area protection for the output transistor is provided. In case, if internal power dissipation becomes too high for the heat sinking provided, the thermal shutdown circuit activates preventing the IC from overheating.
These compact sized LM78XX series of regulators are easy to use and minimize the number of external components. It is not compulsary to bypass the output, although this does improve transient response. Input bypassing is necessary only if the regulator is located far from the filter capacitor of the power. Moreover, the 7806 voltage regulator IC does not require any component to balance or saturate their output voltage.
