Description

The CD4014BC is a parallel input/serial output shift register with eight stages. Individual JAM inputs to each of the eight stages are enabled by a parallel/serial control input. The sixth, seventh, and eighth stages all have Q outputs. To each register stage, the CD4014 has a common CLOCK and PARALLEL/SERIAL CONTROL input, a single SERIAL data input, and individual parallel “JAM” inputs.

These eight-stage parallel input/serial output shift registers take (input) data in parallel and control four parallel output pins. This is useful when our MCU/MPU does not have enough GPIO pins to control the needed number of outputs. Meanwhile, these ICs are commonly employed in projects requiring the control of a large number of LEDs via a microcontroller. Because they may operate as the data bit for LCD displays, they can also be utilised to interface LCD screens.

The CD4014 is a CMOS logic-based integrated circuit from the CD4000 series of integrated circuits. It’s an eight-stage shift register with serial or parallel input/output. There are pins for serial and parallel inputs. The input mode can be controlled via the mode selection pin. Control pins also provide for inputs to the 8-stage shift register. This integrated circuit is made up of flipflops. All flipflops receive transition signals from the common clock signal, which is why they are synchronous. To protect against static discharges, all inputs are connected to diodes. It’s available in PDIP, GDIP, and PDSO packages with 16 pins.

Applications of CD4014:

  • Parallel input/serial output data queueing
  • Parallel to serial data conversion
  • General-purpose register
