The CD4017 is defined as one of the most prominent Decade Counter used nowadays (Divided by 10 Counter). It is designed as a 5-stage divide-by-10 Johnson counter with 10 decoded outputs and a carryout bit. CD4017 operates at a wide supply voltage range from 3V to 15V and is compatible with TTL. It has a medium speed of operation, typically 5 MHz. CD4017 offer a wide range of application such as industrial electronics, remote metering, automotive, medical electronics, instrumentation, and alarm systems.
The clock is constantly applied on the terminal. This IC will reset when the RESET signal is supplied, and the output Q0 will become HIGH. Cycle Q0 goes LOW and Q1 goes HIGH at the positive switching of the next clock, and so on. When the outputs Q5 and Q1 go HIGH, the outputs become LOW and HIGH, respectively. When the Clock Enable input is set to high, the counter will not count clock cycles.
These counters are reset to zero when a logical “1” is placed on their reset line. When the clock enable signal is in the logical “0” state, these counters are advanced on the positive edge of the clock signal. The CD4017BM’s configuration allows for medium-speed operation while also ensuring a safe counting sequence. The 10/8 decoded outputs are normally in the logical “0” state and only attend the logical “1” condition at their assigned slot. Finally, for one full clock cycle, each decoded output remains high. Meanwhile, for each 10/8 clock input cycle, the carry-out signal completes a full cycle and is used as a ripple carry signal to any subsequent stages.
