The GUVA-S12SD UV Sensor chip is a microcontroller-compatible module used for detecting the intensity of UV radiation in sunlight. These are widely used in any application where we want to monitor the amount of UV light and is simple to connect to any microcontroller through one ADC channel.
This module operates with a typical UV detection wavelength of 200 – 370nm, then outputs a calibrated analogue voltage that varies with the UV light intensity. The UV Sensor module is based on the renowned sensor GUVA-S12SD. This is a Gallium Nitride material based Schottky-type photodiode, designed for photovoltaic mode operation. The other main component is an Op-Amp IC SGM8521 which is a rail-to-rail input and output voltage feedback amplifier offering low cost. Thus Op-Amp offers a wide input common-mode voltage range and output voltage swing. It also takes the minimum operating supply voltage down to 2.1V and the maximum recommended supply voltage to 5.5V. Moreover, SGM8521 provides 150 kHz bandwidth at a low current consumption of 4.7 µA.
The module provides a standard, right-angled, 3-pin male-header interface connection:
- GND: 0V (Ground connection)
- VCC: 3.3V to 5.5V (5mA current consumption)
- OUT: 0V to 1V ( 0 to 10 UV Index)
