IN5408 Diode designed as a high forward current and reverse voltage with a power dissipation of 6.25W. Hence also known as a power diode. 1N5408 Diode offers a maximum current carrying capacity is 3A and it can withstand peaks up to 200A. Hence these diode circuits designed specifically for less than 3A. Meanwhile, it provides a reverse current of 10uA which is quite negligible. These diodes have a slow recovery time so in modern electronics it is being replaced by other advanced diodes. These diodes manufactured in DO-201 Package and provides a repetitive reverse voltage of 1000V.
A diode designed as a semiconductor device specifically acts as a one-way switch for current. It permits flow of current easily in one direction, but severely restricts current from flowing in the opposite direction. The two terminals of the diode known as the anode and cathode. The most common applications of diode includes converting AC to DC, isolating signals from a supply, and mixing signals. The 2 sides of the diode doped differently. One side is the “p-side”, this features a positive charge. The opposite side reffered as the “n-side”, this has a negative charge. Both of these sides are layered together to form what is known as the “n-p junction” where they meet. The figure below indicates the diode symbol:
