Electrical testers are used to generate signals and record responses from electronic devices that are being tested (DUTs). This allows the proper operation of the DUT to be shown, as well as the location of any device defects. Any meaningful work on electronics systems requires the use of electronic test equipment.

Electronic test equipment ranging from the very simple and inexpensive (such as a test light comprising just of a light bulb and a test lead) to the exceedingly complicated and sophisticated (such as automated test equipment) is used in practical electronics engineering and assembly (ATE). Many of these instruments are frequently included in ATE, both in actual and virtual forms.

When creating circuits and systems, more complex test equipment is required than when performing production testing or troubleshooting current production units in the field.
