The LM340 and LM7805 Family monolithic 3-terminal positive voltage regulators employ internal current limiting, thermal shutdown and safe-area compensation, making them essentially indestructible. They will generate over 1.5-A output current if appropriate heat sinking is given. They’re designed to be used as fixed voltage regulators in a variety of applications, including local (on-card) control to reduce noise and distribution issues caused by single-point regulation. These devices are frequently employed with external components to get adjustable output voltages and currents in addition to their usage as fixed voltage regulators.
The LM340-XX positive voltage regulators have three terminals and preset output values of 5.0V or 15V. LM340 regulators, on the other hand, are full 3-terminal regulators that do not require any extra components to function normally. However, by adding a couple of components, the transient responsiveness, variable output voltage, and output current can all be improved. Internally corrected error amplifier; voltage reference specifically built for minimal noise and high predictability. The regulator also has fixed current limiting and thermal protection, in addition to the pass components. The LM340 is available in two packages: metal can TO-3 and plastic TO-220.
