PIC16F688 Microcontroller IC family of devices offers the advantages of all PIC18 microcontrollers. It provides high computational performance at an economical price, with an added feature of high endurance, Enhanced Flash program memory. These are low-cost, high-performance, 8-bit, fully static, with Flash-based CMOS microcontrollers. These microcontrollers employ an advanced RISC architecture with only 35 single-word/single-cycle instructions. All instructions in this microcontroller exist in a single cycle (200 µs) except for program branches, which also take two cycles. And features 8 channels for the 10-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) converter, 2 Comparators, 2 Timers (8-bit and 16-bit) and supports SPI, I2C, and UART communication protocols.
 The PIC16F688 devices feature a 13-bit program counter capable of addressing an 4K x 14 program memory space. In which only the first 4K x 14 (0000h-03FFh) for the PIC16F887 devices physically implemented. Hence accessing the location above these boundaries cause a wrap around within the first 4K x 14 space. The Reset vector is at 0000h and the interrupt vector is at 0004h.
Meanwhile, the data memory partitioned into four different banks, which contain the General Purpose Registers and the Special Function Registers. The Special Function Registers located in the first 32 locations of each bank. Whereas the last 96 location allocated for General Purpose Registers, implemented as static RAM and mapped across both banks. These Special Function Registers are registers used by the CPU and peripheral functions. Thus controlling the desired operation of the device.
Moereover, this microcontroller IC features Power-on Reset (POR), Brown-out Reset (BOR), Low Current Watchdog Timer (WDT) etc functions. Thus making it perfect for task critical and industrial applications. The controller supports In Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) allowing to program of the controller easily even without removing from the actual circuit.
