This 3 Channel Infrared White/Black Line Detection Module is used widely in line following robots utilize 3 IR transmitter/receiver pairs spaced about 25mm (1″) apart to implement a complete line tracking setup. Infrared Reflective Sensor Module widely used in line following robots, object sorting Robot. Thus this module sense if a surface is white or black. It consists of three IR transmitters & an IR receiver.
The line tracking module detects the difference in the amount of reflection between the line trying to follow and the adjacent surface of the floor.  It can operate at a measuring distance range from 0-4cm. The detection works by emitting an infrared (IR)beam downward by the transmitter and sense if the IR reflected back off a reflective surface or not to determine if the sensor is positioned over the line. If lies not over the line, then to know if it lies on the left or right of the line, the two other sensors are placed on either side of the centre sensor.
This module operates by simply applying a 5V power and ground applied to the module. An onboard green LED present in the module indicates when power is applied. The module typically provides 3 logic-level outputs, one each for the left, centre and right sensor. These sensor outputs are normally at a logic HIGH level. When a sensor detects IR rays, the output for that channel switches to LOW. And the associated red LED on the back of the board lights up. The onboard potentiometer in the module was used to adjust the sensitivity. This adjustment depends on how high the module is from the stripe and also the width of the stripe and its reflectivity.
