Description
A switched-mode power supply (SMPS) is an electronic circuit that converts power utilizing switching devices that are turned on and off at high frequencies, as well as storage components like inductors or capacitors to provide power while the switching device is not conducting.
An SMPS, like other power supplies, converts the voltage and current characteristics while transferring power from a DC or AC source (typically mains power) to DC loads, such as a personal computer. Unlike a linear power supply, a switching-mode supply’s pass transistor alternates between low-dissipation, full-on and full-off states all the time, spending relatively little time in the high-dissipation transitions, reducing wasted energy.
