Description
The 74LS42 is a multipurpose decoder that accepts four BCD inputs and outputs 10 mutually exclusive signals. It belongs to the 74XXYY IC family. The Schottky barrier diode technique was used to build the 74LS42 for high speed. The 74LS42 IC can work in a wide variety of voltages and under a wide range of circumstances. And it works with CMOS, NMOS, and TTL directly. The IC’s output is always in TTL, making it simple to interface with other TTL devices and microcontrollers.
A Binary Decoder converts coded inputs into coded outputs with distinct input and output codes. Decoders can “decode” either a Binary or BCD (8421 code) input pattern to a Decimal output code. 2-to-4, 3-to-8, and 4-to-16 line designs are examples of practical “binary decoder” circuits. The output code of a decoder normally has more bits than the input code.
These BCD-to-decimal decoders consist of eight inverters and ten, four-input NAND gates. The inverters are connected in pairs to allow the NAND gates to decode BCD input data. Meanwhile, the Full decoding of input logic assures that for all incorrect (10 15) input situations, all outputs remain off. This IC works with a supply voltage ranging from 3 to 18 volts. This IC is designed to operate at temperatures ranging from -55°C to 125°C, which is the complete military temperature range.
