Description

CD4022 was designed as a TTL logic Octal Counter IC. Every input clock pulse increments the number of output pins from zero to eight. Digital counters, LED drivers, and other digital arithmetic applications often use a clock frequency of 5Mhz. The IC CD4022 is utilised in counting applications because it can switch on 8 outputs consecutively at a pre-determined time and reset or hold the count as necessary. It also includes the option to use a Carry pin to show the status of counting. This is frequently used in LED chasers and other logical output projects where arithmetic calculations are required. Because the carry pin generates one clock pulse for every eight clock pulses on the clock pin, it’s also known as a Divide by 8 Counter. So, if you need a sequential decoded counting IC that can count up to 8, this is the IC for you. As the CD4022 is based on TTL logic, it can be used in combination with other digital ICs like as flip-flops and logic gates.

The IC may operate between 3 and 15 volts, however, it is typically powered with +5 volts on the Vdd/Vcc pin and ground on the Ground/Vss pin. We have 8 output pins spanning from Q0 to Q7 that can be linked to any load, however, we are utilizing LEDs in this design as shown below. When this IC detects a high pulse from the clock pin, it will increment the count from 0 to 7 (Q0 to Q7) (pin 14). So we’ll need a clock source to keep this IC ticking. This clock source could be a simple 555 Timer circuit that can generate pulses or a microcontroller like Arduino, PIC, or any microcontroller that can generate bespoke pulses via I/O ports. The output changes in a logical order.
