CD4054 is part of the CD4000 IC family. The CD4054 is a display driver integrated circuit for a four-segment liquid crystal display. These integrated circuits are built using complementary MOS (CMOS) technology with p-type and n-type enhancement mode transistors. CD4054 is housed in a hermetically sealed dual in line IC package with 16 pins. The IC is compatible with other TTL, CMOS, and NMOS devices and has a wide range of operating voltages. Static protection is provided via I/O clamping diodes on each pin of the IC.
The CD4054 is a single-digit BCD-to-seven-segment decoder/driver circuit with level-shifting capabilities. The BCD input-signal swings (VDD to VSS) are kept equal to or different from the 7-segment output-signal swings using this feature (VDD to VEE). The DISPLAY FREQUENCY (DF) input controls the 7-segment outputs of this IC, permitting low, high, or square-wave outputs to be selected (for liquid-crystal displays).
When the DF input is kept low, the output segments picked by the BCD inputs will be high. When the DF input is high, the output segments flip to low when selected by the BCD inputs. When a square wave is present at the DF input, the selected segments will output a square wave that is 180 degrees out of phase with the DF input. Those segments that are not chosen will produce a square-wave output that is in phase with the input. DF square-wave repetition rates for LCDs commonly vary form 30 Hz (far above flicker rate) to 200 Hz (much below the maximum limit of the liquid-crystal frequency response) (well below the upper limit of the liquid-crystal frequency response).
