TinySwitch-III family introduced by Power Integrations designed as the latest generation of its industry-leading TinySwitch series of off-line switcher ICs. An off-line regulator, basically a complete integrated circuit with all functionalities at a low cost, with high efficiency, off-line switcher solution in the 0 to 10 W range.
The TNY279PN incorporates a 700 V power MOSFET, oscillator, high voltage switched current source, current limit (user selectable) and thermal shutdown circuitry. Thus offers a design flexible solution with a low system cost and extended power capability. Unlike conventional PWM (pulse width modulator) controllers, it uses a simple ON/OFF control to regulate the output voltage. They initiate its operation and run on the power derived from the DRAIN voltage. Thereby eliminating the need for a transformer bias winding and the associated circuitry. Hence, it consume only about 80 mW at no load, from 265 VAC input. The IC family uses an ON/OFF control scheme also eliminates the need for loop compensation.
An off-line regulator is basically a complete integrated circuit with all functionalities necessary to ensure clean power to a small portable or handheld device. Or used as part of a larger switched-mode power supply (SMPS) or DC-DC converter. Moreover, it features line-compensated overload power protection. As a result, these devices dramatically reduce the maximum overload power that can be delivered into the load over the entire AC input voltage range. The 700 V MOSFET easily allows 80 percent de-rating for high reflected voltage and high bus-voltage designs. Meanwhile, it offers an Efficiency of greater than 70 percent at five percent load. This enables designers to meet the stringent European standard specification requirement.
