X9C104 is designed as a digitally controlled potentiometer module that simulates the mechanical control of a potentiometer. This integrated circuit contains a resistor array of 99 series-related resistors and a wiper switching network. Also, the entire module is controlled via a microcontroller module and selects the place where the centre pin of the “potentiometer” connects, anywhere in the 100 points available (at the ends or between the resistors). The wiper position is controlled by a 3-wire interface by the CS, U/D, and INC inputs. Further, the wiper position is stored in non-volatile memory and then recalled upon a subsequent power-up operation.
The device can function as both a three-terminal potentiometer or as a two-terminal variable resistor in a wide range of applications ranging from control to signal processing to parameter adjustment. It is capable of inserting a hundred resistors with a 1K ohm value. So using these pins, resistors can be selected so we can digitally vary the resistance of the potentiometer. The device dissipates a power of 10 mW and supports resistors with a maximum current of 4.4 mA. Highly recommended not to design a circuit in which this current exceeds this maximum, otherwise, you may burn the potentiometer.
This module operates in a wide range of applications such as resistive divider, variable resistance. Moreover, x9c104 is used in different schemes with operational amplifiers or other analogue circuits.
