The 74HC164 designed as CMOS Level 8-Bit, two Serial inputs based and Parallel output register used to increase the output pins of the microcontroller unit. There are two serial data inputs (DSA and DSB) and eight parallel data outputs on the device (Q0 to Q7). Data is entered serially by DSA or DSB, with either input frequently serving as an active HIGH enable for data entry via the other. On the clock (CP) input’s LOW-to-HIGH transitions, data is moved. A LOW on the master reset input (MR) clears the register, forcing all outputs to be LOW, regardless of other inputs. Clamp diodes are used as inputs. This allows current limiting resistors to be used to interface inputs to voltages other than VCC.
Since it function as 8-bit, it’s 8 output pins will be assumed as 8 output pins of any microcontroller unit. Thus, it asynchronously contains data serially in its input pins microcontrollers. And supply output on 8 different output pins. This again connects to Transistor switches, LEDs, or in other input pins of sensor or parallel interfaces.
This IC widely utilized in controlling LED arrays or LCDs that support 8-bit parallel inputs. So, if in your application, you’re running out of output pins, then this 74HC164 8-Bit Parallel out / serial-in register could be the proper choice for you. Other than this, it’s a transparent input also. This 14 pin register offers input voltage from 2V to 6V, which exposes a low voltage microcontroller application also. Thus, often used for 3.3V and 5V logic levels also .
