The CD4015 designed as a Dual 4-bit Serial In – Parallel Out Shift Register. It offers a wide operating voltage up to 18V, hence can be used in high voltage applications. The IC is commonly used as I/O expander along with a microcontroller to control multiple outputs like LED, LCD display, etc.
These 4-bit serial In – Parallel Out Shift Registers take (input) data serially and control four parallel output pins. This is useful when our MCU/MPU does not have enough GPIO pins to control the needed number of outputs. Furthermore, it is frequently utilised in projects requiring the control of a large number of LEDs via a microcontroller. It’s also utilised to connect LCD screens because it serves as the data bit for LCD displays.
