These are N-channel high voltage power MOSFETs with a controlled turn-on gate driver, voltage mode PWM controller with integrated 100 kHz oscillator, high voltage start-up bias circuit, bandgap derived reference, bias shunt regulator/error amplifier for loop compensation, and fault protection circuitry. TOPSwitch is a current-to-duty cycle converter with an open drain output that is self-biased and guarded. This IC achieves high efficiency by utilizing CMOS technology and integrating as many functionalities as feasible. When compared to bipolar or discrete solutions, the CMOS greatly reduces bias currents. Furthermore, the Integration removes the need for external power resistors for current sensing and/or initial start-up bias current. The inner output MOSFET duty cycle reduces linearly with increased CONTROL pin current during normal operation. The DRAIN and CONTROL pins each execute many roles to accomplish all of the necessary control, bias, and protection functions.
